Missing Child Procedure Summary
What to do if a child is missing or separated from their adult.
Purpose
This procedure explains the immediate steps to follow if a child is reported missing or separated from their parent, guardian, coach or responsible adult during NDTC 2026.
Step 1: Stay Calm and Gather Key Details
- Child's name, age and description.
- Clothing and distinguishing features.
- Last known location.
- Time last seen.
- Name and contact number of the responsible adult.
Step 2: Report Immediately
Inform the Event Safeguarding Lead, event control or a senior event official immediately. Use the Missing Child Alert form on the safeguarding portal as soon as possible.
Step 3: Start a Coordinated Search
- Do not search alone without informing the safeguarding team.
- Follow instructions from event control or the safeguarding team.
- Check nearby event areas, toilets, entrances, exits and gathering points.
- Do not leave your assigned duty area unless instructed.
Step 4: Secure Exits if Required
Where appropriate, event officials may be asked to monitor exits and key access points. No child should be forcibly stopped, but concerns should be reported immediately.
Step 5: Escalate if Not Found Quickly
If the child is not located quickly, or if there is any concern that the child may be at risk, the safeguarding team must contact the police by calling 999.
Step 6: Reunification
When the child is found, they must only be reunited with their parent, guardian, coach or responsible adult after appropriate checks have been made.
Step 7: Record the Incident
A Missing Child Alert record must be completed and closed only after the outcome, actions taken, who found the child, and who the child was reunited with have been recorded.
Important Reminder
Missing child incidents must never be ignored, delayed or treated casually. Immediate, calm and coordinated action is required.
